Obtaining a work permit in Kenya involves the following steps:
i. Eligibility Assessment: This is done to prove that the applicant possesses skills, qualifications and expertise that are not available in the Kenyan labour market.
ii. Job Offer: One must secure a job offer from a Kenyan employer before applying for a work permit.
iii. Work Permit categorization: Work permits are categorized as Class A, Class B, Class C and Special Passes. Each work permit category has specific requirements and eligibility criteria
iv. Application Submission: One needs to submit application to the Kenyan Department of Immigration.
v. Processing and Approval: If the application meets all the requirements, it is approved by the Department of Immigration.
vi. Medical Examination: Some work permit categories may require a medical examination as part of the application process to ensure that the applicant does not pose health risk to the public.
vii. Security Clearance: A security clearance may be required for individuals working in sensitive areas.
viii. Fee Payment: Applicants are required to pay a fee, which varies depending on the class of the permit.
ix. Issuance of Work Permit: The permit will specify the type of work you are allowed to undertake and its duration.
x. Renewal: The renewal process is similar to the initial application process.

There are various classes of permit as provided under the Kenya Citizenship and Immigration Act 2011. All applications for permits and passes are made and submitted online accompanied by all the necessary requirements which should be uploaded. Applicants can print out their own permits and passes from eFNS accounts .Below is the whole process;
I. Create an online electronic Foreign Nationals Services(eFNS) account .
II. Fill out the relevant online application form(s).
III. Submit all the requested documents and make sure your employer does as well.
IV. Pay the electronic application fee.
V. Wait for updates on your application.
